Summary:
Sepsis is a syndrome of life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Leukocyte gene expression suggests that although most septic patient upregulate inflammatory pathways in response to infection, as many as 40% shift to an immuno-suppressed state. This heterogeneity may underlie neutral results from sepsis immunomodulation trials.
